The main factor determines the success in dental implant surgery that is quality of jawbone.
It must respond enough conditions such as width, height and depth to support the titan screw which is place into the jowl. However, in several cases where the bone under the gums loses too much, a bone grafting is implemented to regrow a strong foundation of bone for the titan screw to anchor into. When you are considering the implant surgery that should pay attention to what a bone graft involves, how it is performed and how much it costs.
Bone grafting is process of rebuilding or restoring bone in the jowl by bone materials that support for the dental implants. Grafting in complexity from expropriate the bone for an implant to create the dramatic changes to the shape and size of the dental ridge. Small grafts can be implemented by a doctor during the implant surgery while extensive procedures are usually performed a specialist as an oral surgeon or periodontist in the previous months.
Bone lose can be caused by trauma, an abscess or infection or periodontal disease. Moreover, the density of bone beneath missing teeth deteriorates over time. Patients who have been missing teeth for months or years usually require bone graft before they can get implants.
The Average Bone Graft Cost
Types of Bone Graft
► Membrane bone grafting
In some cases, placing an implant at the time of a tooth extraction is possible if the size of the hole is more or less the same as the implant post. But normally, many doctor prefer to be on the safe side and select to place a socket graft to fill the hole while your bone have opportunity to grow and fill the space.
The hole is then secured with a membrane of collagen and some dissolvable stiches to retain the graft material in the tooth socket for the bone healing phase to start.
During the healing phase, especially if the extracted tooth is at the front, the doctor will propose you to wear a temporary denture with the fake tooth. Once the healing is over and the bone substitute has been replaced by your own bone, the implant operation can be performed.
►Block bone grafting
A block graft can be harvested from the patient or it can be a human or bone substitute. The block is tacked into place of the jawbone with a fixation screw or tack and left to heal for a period of some months (4 – 8 months) until the patient’s body accepts the graft and in becomes natural bone to the patient’s body. After the wound is completed the healing process, the area is ready for implant placing. The human body also needs to proper maintenance to stay the health. Almost people know the natural rule that the muscles start to atrophy when they are not being used, the bones begin to do the same thing in case if a tooth has been extracted and is not being restored on time. The act biting or chewing are a way to exercise the bone and will help it maintain its size.
Bone Graft Procedure
The doctors will fill the selected region with this dental bone graft material that will act as a type of placeholders so that bone healing and remodeling can take place. In reality, the bone healing process will begin and your body will see the graft as some natural bone to repair so over time, it will restore it with your bone.
You will need to take X-rays before your bone grafting procedure so your doctor can check your quality of jawbone. You will also probable need to take CT Scanning (a more accurate and 3D X-ray pictures), which will measure exactly the height and width of your existing bone.
First, the doctors will local anesthesia. An incision is made in the gum at the recepted site, a bone block or bone powder will place into the hole which are removable after the recovery period during the implant procedure. A mixture of marrow and other material is placed around the edges of the block to stimulate bonding. The doctors then lays down a tissue membrane over the graft before closing the incision.
It can take 4 – 8 months for recreate the bone to heal and integrate with surrounding bone before implants can be placed.
Recovery and Post-Procedure Care
Flossing after the surgery, the patient will be given pain medication, antibiotics and an antibacterial mouthwash. They are advised to avoid certain foods and putting stress on the graft till it heals completely. Depending on the size of the graft and the materials used, it can take 4 – 9 months before the jaw is strong enough to receive implants. During the time, the patient should maintain proper oral care (routine brushing and flossing) and a healthy diet to make sure its success.
