Bridges, also known as fixed bridges or fixed restorations, are a method of dental restorations to replace one or more missing teeth. The bridge extends over the toothless region and is usually made up of an artificial tooth that is stuck between the two toothbrushes. (A dental implant is a hollowed-up artificial tooth implanted on a natural tooth or an implant.) The bridge is held firmly in place by the side teeth of the missing tooth or by the implant. The bridge is permanent and cannot be removed.
Types of dental bridge
There are different types of bridges. The doctor or prosthetist will give you the most suitable type based on the position of the missing tooth and the condition of your teeth and gums.
Traditional bridges are used if natural teeth are lost on each side of the tooth. (An alternative to using a bridge, a dentist may recommend an implant to replace a missing tooth between two healthy teeth.) Implant will help you do not need to sharpen your healthy teeth being given a tooth.)
The bridge tooth, also known as the Maryland bridge is used when the missing teeth are the incisors. This bridge consists of artificial teeth linked together with metal and attached to the inside of the natural teeth.
The cantilever bridge is used when there are healthy teeth on only one tooth missing. Treatment includes the insertion of artificial teeth into one or more adjacent natural teeth.
Take care of your bridge
If you take care of the bridge carefully, the bridge will be able to be used for 10 years or longer. Just like natural teeth, bridges need to be brushed and flossed daily. The dentist will show you how to use the dental floss under and around the artificial tooth in the middle of the bridge. Seeing a dentist regularly and taking a toothbrush is also important. If you have an implant bridge, your doctor will also teach you how to care for them appropriately.
Note: the efficacy of the treatment can vary depending on each patient’s condition.
