Everyone knows that smoking causes many bad effects to us, especially it may bring about many threats to our oral health. Most people using tobacco are aware of these risks, but they do not know how much their habits can hurt their dental health. Studies reported that implant failure and its complications associated are twice in smokers as compared to non-smokers. A researcher at the University of Murcia in Spain said "When an implant is placed in a smoker, it is more likely to fail."
What are dental problems smoking lead to?
1. Smokers are more likely to develop an infection subsequent to be placement of dental implant. When you smoke, you weaken your body’s autoimmune defenses. Your body will have a hard time protecting itself. Suddenly, tartar buildup becomes a major issue because your body can’t battle a potential infection. This may require the implant dentist to remove them in order to eliminate the bacterial infection.
2. Smoking reduces the flow of blood to the hard tissue in the jaw bone and the soft tissue in the mouth. This impedes the ability of the dental implant to undergo osseointergration with the jaw bone and to heal properly
3. Smoking prolongs the healing time for implant dentistry. This means it can take longer time for you to recover from oral surgery (a fusion between the titanium material of the implant and the jawbone). Subsequently, patient can more easily damage that young fusion and underlying jaw bone through simple actions like chewing or eating.
From those three hazards of smoking to dental implant above, the best thing you can do for your dental health is, of course, to stop smoking. At I-Dent Dental Implant Center, we advise you to cease smoking from 2 to 4 weeks before having dental implant and from 4 to 6 weeks after oral surgery.
We welcome all patients considering implant dentistry at I-Dent Dental Implant Center, whether you are smokers or non-smoker. We are willing to help you deal with all dental problems.
